Growing mushrooms scales in your head fine — more blocks, more shelves, more flushes. Filling those blocks is where the plan runs into a wall. Mixing a batch of substrate takes an afternoon; hand-packing a hundred bags one scoop at a time takes the rest of the week. What an autobagger does
A machine like the Thor sits in one specific spot in the production line: after the substrate is mixed and hydrated, before it goes into the sterilizer. Its job is narrow and mechanical — meter a set weight of mixed, wet substrate into a filter-patch bag, tamp or settle it, and hand you a sealed-ready block, over and over, at a pace and consistency no person holding a scoop can match for a full shift.
That's the whole value proposition. It doesn't mix your masters mix, it doesn't sterilize anything, and it doesn't make decisions about your recipe. It takes substrate you've already mixed to your target moisture → and turns it into filled bags, fast, at whatever fill weight you've told it to hit. Everything upstream (mixing, hydration) and downstream (sealing, loading the sterilizer barrel) still has to happen — the autobagger just removes the slowest, most repetitive step in the middle.
Why consistent fill weight is the whole point
Uniform weight and density → uniform colonization and fruiting
Every block from a run should behave like every other block. That only happens if they start from the same place: the same substrate, the same moisture — and the same fill weight and density. Speed is the feature people notice first; consistency is the feature that actually pays off.
A block that's denser or lighter than the rest of the batch doesn't colonize on the same clock. Mycelium runs through packed substrate at a different rate than loose substrate, and a heavier or lighter block holds a different amount of moisture and headspace than its neighbors. Multiply that variance across a hundred blocks and your "one batch" is quietly several different batches wearing the same label — some ready to pin early, some lagging, some over- or under-hydrated.
That variance doesn't stay contained to the grow room. Your whole planning math — how much yield to expect, when a flush is coming, how many blocks to start this week — leans on the assumption that blocks are interchangeable. Run the Biological Efficiency calculator → and it will tell you exactly that: BE% only means something if it's calculated against a known, consistent block weight. A batch with a 10% weight swing between blocks doesn't have one BE number, it has a spread — and a spread is much harder to plan a week around than a number. Dialing in the fill
Don't run a full batch on a setting you haven't verified. Dial the machine in first, every time you start a session and every time something upstream changes.
Pick your target block weight
Decide the finished, hydrated weight you're filling to before you touch a dial. Most gourmet operations standardize around a 5 lb block — pick your own number based on your recipe and your bags, and use it as the fixed target for everything that follows.
Run test bags and weigh them
Fill several bags at the current setting, then put each one on a scale. Don't trust the machine's dial or timer readout — trust the number the scale gives you. This is the step people skip when they're in a hurry, and it's the one that catches a miscalibrated run before it becomes a hundred wrong blocks.
Adjust the auger, timer, or gate
Nudge the fill toward your target in small increments — whatever mechanism your setup uses to meter substrate — and re-weigh after each change. Small, repeated adjustments get you there faster and more reliably than one big guess.
Re-check density, not just weight
Two bags can land on the same scale reading and still not be the same block. A loosely filled bag and a firmly packed bag can share a weight while holding very different amounts of air and substrate contact — and they won't colonize on the same schedule. Check how the substrate sits in the bag, not only what it weighs.
Lock it in and spot-check through the run
Once you're consistently on target, keep weighing — periodically, not just at the start. Hopper level dropping, substrate settling, or a batch of mix that was wetter or drier than the last one can all pull the fill off target mid-session without any alarm telling you it happened.
Note on moisture: wetter substrate packs heavier per scoop or auger cycle than drier substrate at the exact same machine setting. If your masters mix batch runs wetter or drier than usual — different pallet of soy hulls, a humid week, a different starting moisture on the sawdust — re-dial the fill before you trust the setting from last time. The machine holds a setting; it doesn't know your substrate changed.
Throughput and the one-person workflow
The whole reason to run an autobagger is what it does to a single person's day. Hand-filling caps out fast — there's only so much scooping and weighing one person can do before other jobs (mixing the next batch, loading the sterilizer, inoculating yesterday's blocks) start slipping. An autobagger, run well, lets one grower fill far more blocks in the same stretch of time than hand-packing ever could, as a general property of autobaggers rather than a number specific to any one machine.
The bagger doesn't work alone in the workflow, though. It pairs with a bag sealer right behind it — filled bags should move straight to sealing rather than sitting open and exposed — and the pace of both should match how fast you can actually load the sterilizer. A bagger that outruns your sterilizer load just means a growing stack of filled, unsealed, or unsterilized bags sitting around picking up contamination risk. Set your rhythm to your slowest real step, not your fastest one, and stage bags in the order they'll go into the barrel so nothing waits longer than it has to.
Cleaning and maintenance
Mixed substrate is abrasive and sticky at the same time — sawdust wears on moving parts, and a wet mix leaves residue everywhere it touches. Clean the machine after every session, not just when it starts jamming. Leftover substrate isn't just a mechanical problem: old, damp organic material sitting in a hopper or auger between runs is exactly the kind of material that harbors mold and bacteria, and you don't want that riding into your next "sterile" batch on the machine itself.
While you're cleaning, check the filter-patch seal on your bag stock and on the fill spout — substrate residue or a damaged seal at the patch is a direct path for contamination once the block is sealed and in the sterilizer. A few minutes of cleaning and a quick seal check at the end of a run is cheap insurance against a jam or a contaminated batch at the start of the next one.
When the standard advice is wrong
Autobaggers get sold on speed. Speed is real, but it's not the thing to optimize first, and chasing it blindly causes most of the problems growers run into.
Chasing raw speed over consistency
A fast fill that swings ±10% in weight is worse than a slightly slower fill that lands within a percent or two every time. Speed only helps if every block coming off the line is still one you'd stake your BE math and your production calendar on. If you have to choose between faster and more consistent, choose consistent — the schedule you lose to sorting out a variable batch costs more time than the bagging speed ever saved.
Ignoring moisture drift
Treating the fill setting as "set once and forget" ignores that your substrate isn't the same every time you mix it. A wetter or drier batch of masters mix changes how it packs at the exact same machine setting — assuming otherwise is how a whole session quietly drifts off target.
Skipping the test-weigh at the start of every run
It's tempting to skip Step 2 because "it was fine last time." Last time's substrate isn't this time's substrate, and a machine that held calibration yesterday can still be off today. The test-weigh takes minutes; a mis-filled batch costs you the whole run.
Assuming the machine holds calibration across a moisture change
A calibration is only valid for the substrate condition it was set against. The moment your moisture content shifts — new pallet, different starting moisture on the dry ingredients, a humid stretch of weather — the old setting is a starting guess, not a guarantee. Re-verify, don't assume.
The run that taught me this lesson wasn't a bad batch of substrate — it was a good one that I bagged carelessly. I was behind schedule, so I skipped the test-weigh and ran straight off yesterday's setting. Yesterday's soy hulls had come from an older pallet; this pallet was fresher and carried more moisture, so the "same" setting was packing noticeably heavier bags without me noticing until the scale caught it three-quarters of the way through the run. The fix cost me twenty minutes of re-weighing and re-dialing. The alternative — not catching it — would have cost me a spread of blocks that colonized and fruited on three different schedules instead of one. Speed is what an autobagger is for.
